Oak Grove Methodist Church was organized in 1880, with worship services and Sunday school held under trees and a brush arbor. The structure was built in 1881 by A.B. Harris. Its six-acre site, including a nearby cemetery, was donated by the Rev. William E. Bates (1812-83), a retired circuit rider and minister. Building costs were supplied through donations from members and friends, which included a horse. Men of the congregation hauled the lumber from the sawmills in east Texas. It was the first church in the community and has served five generations of residents.
