Sherars Falls is a small but extremely dangerous waterfall on Oregon’s Deschutes River, the last falls before the river reaches the Columbia. Located within the Warm Springs Indian Reservation, it is an important sacred fishing ground where local Native tribes continue to harvest salmon, steelhead, and lamprey. Tribal fishers use traditional dip nets from rocks and platforms, and only tribal members may fish on and around those structures under federal permit for the reservation. The site also has overland travel significance: the nearby bridge is tied to the Barlow Road crossing used by westbound wagon trains, and the falls were named for wagon road builder Joseph Sherar.
