The east side is dedicated to Dixie Cornell Gebhardt, creator of the Iowa flag. The west side is dedicated to Marion County's William Milo Stone, the sixth governor of Iowa, a friend of Abraham Lincoln who was present at Lincoln's assassination and helped carry the mortally wounded president across the street to the boarding home where he later died. The building shown in the painting once stood where the Civil War Memorial is now and served as the capital during Stone's tenure before it caught fire a few years after he left the governorship. The north side features Old Glory. The south side shows a view from a helicopter door while wounded soldiers are being retrieved, and on this side the ashes of Clifford DeMoss, a Vietnam veteran from Knoxville who died in April 2010, are painted into the rock.
