The first courthouse on this site served as the Confederate capitol of Louisiana and the headquarters of the Trans-Mississippi Department, C.S.A., from 1863 until May 26, 1865, when the last Confederate flag was lowered. Major General Henry W. Allen was inaugurated here and served here as governor.
