First settled in the 1880s, the town was known as Annaliza and was renamed in 1858 by emigrants from Kentucky. Its unique layout gave it protection against Indian attacks, and it stood on freight and stage routes. Sacred Harp, a robust frontier gospel style of singing and composition, began here. During the Civil War, it served as a rendezvous for the Quantrill gang.
