Fort Clinch was one of a chain of Seminole Indian War forts from 1849 to 1858. Several men who served at this post later gained prominence in the Civil War, including Generals George G. Meade, A.P. Hill, and "Stonewall" Jackson. It was garrisoned by 1st. Art., 7th Inf. U.S. Army and Florida Mounted Volunteers.
