Before 1892, large quantities of kerosene for Point Betsie’s beacon and apartment lamps were stored at the base of the lighthouse tower. In 1892, as at other light stations, a separate iron-sided building was erected on a concrete foundation between the lighthouse and the fog signal building to store up to 360 gallons of this potentially explosive fuel more safely so an accident would not threaten the lighthouse itself. After the light station was electrified, the structure was moved to its current location and used as a paint locker.
