A memorial service was held at this spot at 6 PM on Oct. 31, 1952, the 65th anniversary of the tragic death of Lt. Eugene Bernard of Kansas City, Kansas, whose Navy Grumman F8F-2 Bearcat fighter crashed a quarter mile south of this village while he was ferrying the plane from Norfolk, VA, to Niagara Falls. Born in 1928 and dying in 1952, he served two tours in Korea, flew 98 missions, and was awarded the Korean Ribbon, Navy Occupation Ribbon, United Nations Medal, and Distinguished Flying Cross.
