Middle River rises in south-central Guthrie County, and its navigable section begins in east-central Adair County near Middle River Forest County Park. Flowing east through croplands, pasture, rolling forested hills, and limestone bluffs, it offers a moderately challenging paddle with occasional chutes and ledges, especially at high or low water levels, and is most enjoyable in spring, early summer, and fall. The river passes man-made features including Madison County’s Roseman Covered Bridge and Holliwell Covered Bridge, and paddlers must portage around the historic ford at Pammel Park, where the Harmon Tunnel, originally constructed in 1858, can also be seen. Middle River eventually empties into the Des Moines River near Carlisle in northern Warren County, with the navigable section extending about 100 miles, while the designated water trail runs just over 45 miles from Middle River Forest County Park to the historic Holliwell Covered Bridge southeast of Winterset. Along this stretch, Roseman Covered Bridge stands out as a cultural landmark: completed in 1883 by local bridge builder Benton Jones, it is one of six remaining covered bridges in Madison County, where covered bridges were once common and were roofed to protect them from weather and increase their durability under bridge rules adopted in 1870. The bridges, which cost from $900 to $1,900, reflect differing local engineering designs and are presented as durable, attractive works linked to the county’s pioneer past. Roseman Bridge is also associated with a local ghost story about an escapee from the jail who vanished during a scuffle inside the bridge as a split posse entered from both ends in the gathering darkness. The river corridor also reveals the county’s geology: Madison County escaped the most recent glaciations of about 12,000 to 15,000 years ago and is part of the Southern Iowa Drift Plain, with rolling hills supported by limestone and shale formed millions of years ago when a vast part of the Midwest lay beneath the Carboniferous Sea; along Middle River, these formations appear in limestone walls and cliffs, including prominent bluffs more than 140 feet high about 1 mile above Pammel Park.
