Mount Gibbs, in California’s Sierra Nevada, rises on the boundary between Yosemite National Park and the Ansel Adams Wilderness and ranks as Yosemite’s sixth-highest mountain. Located 2.6 miles south of Mount Dana, it was named for Harvard professor Oliver Gibbs, a friend of Josiah Whitney. Above the tree line, the mountain is mostly barren and alpine, with sparse plant life, summer wildflowers, and usually only patchy snow on its northern slope in summer. It can be reached from Tioga Pass Road or by Bloody Canyon from the Walker Lake trailhead, with the easiest ascent following the west ridge to broad summit views that include Mono Lake.
