Hoel S. Wright and Carl G. Mueller, two early founders of Wrightstown, built and shaped the house through their wider role in the settlement’s development. Wright and his wife, Orilla, founded the settlement after moving there from Pawlett, Vermont, in 1833. He operated a trading post, ran a ferry service across the Fox River, and built an inn called the American House. In 1843, he received a federal patent for 121 acres on the east side of the Fox River and built a new home on part of that property, where he lived with his family until 1865. Mueller, a native of Germany, arrived in 1856 and succeeded to Wright’s business interests, opening the region’s first general store, managing the American House, and operating a sawmill and a brewery. In 1871, he purchased several large tracts of land on the east side, including Wright’s house, which he entirely rebuilt and expanded with the wings of the present structure. In 1974, the Village of Wrightstown purchased the property, and the house was restored by the Wrightstown Historical Society with funding from a grant by the Fort Howard Paper Foundation.
