When the Clark County seat was moved from Greenville to Arkadelphia in 1842, a log building on this site served as the courthouse until a permanent structure was completed in 1844. In 1860, a handsome two-story brick building replaced the log house, and in its basement shells, percussion caps, and probably small cannon were secretly made for the Confederate army.
