On May 30, 1927, a monument erected by the American Legion Auxiliary of Meade, Kansas, with the assistance of ex-service men and patriotic citizens, was dedicated to the memory of Meade County's departed veterans of all wars. It also replaced the monument placed on this site in 1886 by Meade Center Post No. 388 G.A.R., which was dedicated to the unknown dead of the Civil War.
