During the Civil War, twenty-two Kentucky courthouses were burned, nineteen of them in the last fifteen months; twelve were burned by Confederates, eight by guerrillas, and two by Union accident. At Stanton, guerrillas burned the courthouse, records, and other buildings in the spring of 1863. After the buildings were rebuilt, the jail and records were burned again on June 1, 1864.
