Benbreen
Nature
Benbreen is a 691-metre mountain in Connemara National Park, at the southern end of the Twelve Bens in Galway. Ranked among Ireland’s higher peaks, it is the fourth-highest mountain in the Twelve Bens and is distinguished by a long, narrow quartzite ridge rather than a single sharp summit. Its main top is accompanied by two subsidiary summits, and its slopes include notable scree near Mám na Gaoithe, the Pass of the Wind. The Irish name, Binn Braoin, is usually translated as Braon’s Peak and may preserve a personal name. Benbreen is especially valued for the demanding Glencoaghan Horseshoe walk and for climbing routes on its northeastern cliffs.
