Bencorr, or Binn Chorr, is a 711-metre mountain near the center of Connemara’s Twelve Bens in County Galway and the second-highest peak in the range after Benbaun. Within Connemara National Park, it is noted for its striking form: a double-summit appearance created by a rocky ridge to Bencorr North Top, the northeast-running Carrot Ridge, and two eastern corries above Derryclare Wood and Lough Inagh. Its Irish names mean “pointed peak,” “peak of the big corrie,” and, from local tradition, “peak of the soldier.” Bencorr is also a major destination for walkers and climbers, with Carrot Ridge especially important for rock climbing.
