In 1660 the General Court received a petition from several members of the colony seeking to settle a plantation at Thirty Mile Island, appointed a committee to view the land, and received a favorable report. In 1662, Sepunnemoe and Towkishk, with Turramuggus, Unlaus, and others of the Wangunk Indian tribe, sold the land of Haddam to agents of the Colony of Connecticut. On October 8, 1668, the town was incorporated when the Court ordered that the plantation of Thirty Mile Island be called Haddum and granted it the power and privilege of a plantation. In the following year, the General Court set Haddum’s bounds to run from the great river westward into the wilderness six miles and eastward into the wilderness six miles.
