William O. Butler, born in Kentucky in 1791, died here in 1880. He served in the War of 1812 at River Raisin, Pensacola, and New Orleans, was on Gen. Andrew Jackson's staff in 1816-17, and was cited for heroism in the Mexican War of 1846-48. He practiced law here, served as a congressman from 1839 to 1843, was defeated as a candidate for Governor in 1844, Vice President in 1848, and U.S. Senate in 1851, and was a Kentucky commissioner to the Peace Conference in February 1861.
