Elk are the second largest members of the deer family after the moose. They can weigh up to 1,000 pounds and run as fast as 40 miles per hour. Their diet includes seasonal grasses, flowers, and woody plants. Once widespread in Canada and the US, they are now mostly restricted to western North America. Male elk grow and shed large antlers every year. During the spring mating season, males spar with each other and bugle, a loud vocal noise, to attract females. Their antlers may weigh as much as 30 pounds. Once common throughout most of North America and Canada, elk declined because of habitat loss and over-hunting.
