Polly Hill Arboretum in West Tisbury on Martha’s Vineyard is a nonprofit botanical garden shaped from former farmland into a significant horticultural landscape. Its land reaches back to a 1687 purchase by settler Henry Luce, with part remaining in agricultural use until Polly Hill’s family acquired a portion as a sheep farm in 1926. Beginning in 1958, Hill developed the property into an arboretum by raising trees from seed and buying adjoining parcels. Its collections include azaleas, magnolias, camellias, hollies, conifers, and endangered monkey puzzle trees, while historic buildings and grounds preserve a long span of island history from colonial farming to modern conservation.
