Jordanelle Reservoir on the Provo River in northern Utah, just north of Heber City, was created by the earthen Jordanelle Dam and became a major part of the region’s water system as well as a popular recreation lake. Built between 1987 and 1993, the project reshaped the landscape by rerouting U.S. Route 40 and U.S. Route 189 and submerging the towns of Keetley, Hailstone, and Jordanelle. It drew debate over preserving the Provo River, local geology, and possible effects on nearby mining. Since Jordanelle State Park opened in 1995, the reservoir has become known for boating, fishing, and endurance events.
