White River Light, built in 1875 on Lake Michigan near Whitehall, Michigan, guided vessels using the nearby river approach and formed part of the coastal navigation system. The limestone station included a 40-foot octagonal tower, an attached keeper’s dwelling, and several support buildings. Its first keeper, Captain William Robinson, served for 47 years and lived there with his wife and thirteen children, making the station both workplace and home. Later, Frances Marshall served there and is remembered as Michigan’s last female lighthouse keeper. Decommissioned in 1960, the property became a museum after Fruitland Township acquired it in 1966 and opened it in 1970.
