Cairo Round Top, also called Dome Mountain or Round Top, is a rounded summit in New York’s Catskill Mountains south of Cairo in Greene County. Its form is echoed in the older Indigenous name Wa-wan-te-pe-kook, used by local Iroquois and Esopus people and translated as “Round Head Piece.” The mountain is composed mainly of quartz sandstone that formed about 400 million years ago from sediment left by an ancient river and later hardened into rock. Around 22,000 years ago, during the Last Glacial Period, glaciers are believed to have completely covered the mountain and helped shape the landscape visible today.
