These corrals are remnants of the extensive corrals and pastures that supported the livestock essential to Sahuaro Ranch's operations. In the ranch's early years, horses and mules provided power for transportation, plowing, and other work. During the 1920s, mechanized equipment replaced them in those roles, but livestock numbers increased as the Smith family raised dairy cows, beef cattle, and later thoroughbred horses. The square corrals were used to hold cattle for branding, shipment, and treatment, while the circular corral, or breaking pen, was used to train horses. The adjacent tack house stored medicine, harnesses, and other horse gear. Other ranch enclosures included pens at the dairy barn and blacksmith shop, horse corrals near the Main House, and a fenced pasture in the pecan orchard. The circular breaking pen, built in 1972, was the last corral constructed at the ranch. The horse corrals near the Main House were later replaced by the rose garden, and the pecan orchard pasture became a recreational area west of the historic park.
