Sagamore means “chief” of an Indian tribe, and on Sagamore Hill chiefs of the Wampanoag and Manomet Indians held tribal meetings. Since the Sagamores last gathered there, the land overlooking Cape Cod Bay has changed greatly. Scusset Creek, which flowed west around Sagamore Hill into Scusset Harbor, was permanently altered by construction of the Cape Cod Canal between 1909 and 1914. The canal’s eastern entrance is now one mile southeast of the original entrance to Scusset Creek. What had been a brackish river winding around Sagamore Hill was filled with dredged material from canal construction and became a fresh water marsh, and the area that had once been Scusset Harbor is now a foredune with houses built on it.
