Winchester Mountain Lookout stands in Washington’s North Cascades at 6,521 feet in the Mount Baker Wilderness, where its summit offers sweeping views of surrounding peaks and the Canadian border. The mountain was reportedly named in the early 1900s by prospector Jack Post after the Winchester rifle he carried. The present L-4 cab lookout was built in 1935 and staffed until 1966 as part of the national forest’s wildfire detection system. Nearly demolished after its service ended, it was restored beginning in 1982 through an agreement between the Mount Baker Club and the Forest Service. Recognized in 1987, it survives today through ongoing volunteer maintenance and remains open to visitors.
