Hannegan Peak is a 6,191-foot summit in Washington’s North Cascades, just north of Hannegan Pass in the Mount Baker Wilderness. Its recorded history began in 1893, when Banning Austin and R.M. Lyle made the first ascent while surveying a possible road over the pass toward Whatcom Pass; although the road was never built, the mountain kept the pass’s name, honoring State Road Commissioner Tom Hannegan. Today it is a popular hiking destination reached by trail to the pass and then the summit, with broad views of Mount Shuksan, Mount Baker, Ruth Mountain, the Picket Range, and surrounding peaks. Its eroded southeast face also preserves remnants of the ancient Hannegan caldera.
