Middlebury College Snowbowl in Hancock, Vermont, is a college-owned ski area on the north slope of Worth Mountain near Middlebury Gap, with seventeen trails, three lifts, and more than seven hundred acres of terrain. Its first trails were cut in 1934, making it one of Vermont’s second-oldest ski areas, and it has hosted intercollegiate competitions since the 1930s. The land came to the college through Joseph Battell’s 1915 bequest, and a 1938 log cabin lodge at the base is regarded as the nation’s oldest standing base lodge. The Snowbowl also became the United States’ first carbon-neutral ski area in 2006 through efficiency and electrification efforts.
