In the 1920s, Louise Chestnut Squires recalled moving in winter into the old hotel behind a huge sand dune that then ran from Lakewood Family Camp Ground to what is now Garden City Beach. Over the years the dune was leveled. She remembered the place as an unspoiled wilderness where deer were plentiful, and her father could go out with a hound dog and soon return with a deer, while he and her brothers could also bring back quail or doves. In the fall, she followed her father to lakes nestled behind the sand dunes and, lying flat and looking over the top, saw hundreds of wild ducks swimming there. Photographs from around 1925 and the 1950s show the area between 6th and 7th Avenues South in Surfside Beach, including a lake behind the inner-most sand ridge, the sand ridge extending from Lakewood Family Campground toward the area now called Garden City, the washed-out area beyond it, the ocean dunes, the strand, and the Atlantic Ocean, as well as the Shady Side Inn and its grounds.
