Manu Temple is a prominent butte-like summit in the Grand Canyon of northern Arizona, rising to 7,184 feet near the North Rim. Its striking relief sets it apart, towering steeply above Bright Angel Canyon on the east and Haunted Canyon on the west. The landform is capped by cream-colored Coconino Sandstone laid down about 265 million years ago as desert dunes in the Permian period, with older rock layers exposed below. Runoff drains south toward the Colorado River through Bright Angel Creek and Phantom Creek. George Wharton James named it for Manu, the Hindu lawgiver, following the canyon’s tradition of names from world mythologies and religions, and the U.S. Board on Geographic Names officially adopted the name in 1906.
