Sandstone Peak is a 3,114-foot mountain in Ventura County and the highest point in the Santa Monica Mountains. Near the western edge of the Santa Monica Mountains National Recreation Area, it overlooks Malibu, the Pacific Ocean, the Conejo Valley, Santa Monica, and four Channel Islands, while marking the divide between the range’s drier inland side and its more humid coastal slopes. Reached by the Sandstone Peak Trail and connected routes such as the Backbone Trail, it has become a major destination for hikers and other visitors. An alternate name, Mount Allen, arose from an unsuccessful effort to honor land donor W. Herbert Allen.
