Moccasin Rangers
Military
One of several partisan groups in western VA during the Civil War, the Moccasin Rangers were Southern sympathizers who operated in the central counties of present-day West Virginia, conducting raids and terrorizing local Unionists. After they looted Ripley in 1861, two rangers were convicted of robbing the mail. One of the group’s leaders was Perry Conley, an associate of Nancy Hart.
