Private Edgar R. Aston of Company L, 8th U.S. Cavalry, received the Medal of Honor for his actions in the Indian Wars at the Battle of San Carlos in Arizona Territory in 1865, when he and two other men volunteered to search for a wagon passage out of a 4,000-foot valley where an infantry column was immobile. The small group traveled six miles among hostile Apache Indians, found the needed passage on their return trip down the canyon, and held off Apache attacks successfully.
