Built in 1876 as the Noble County Jail and Sheriff's Home, this building served as the county jail for 92 years. During those years it housed 35 sheriffs and their families as well as approximately 20,000 prisoners. Its architecture is Second Empire/Gothic with a Mansard slate roof and galvanized tin crenellations, and the building cost $25,000. Since 1968, it has been owned and maintained by the Noble County Historical Society as The Old Jail Museum, where volunteer members endeavor to preserve Noble County's history through preservation of the building and grounds and through collections of historic artifacts, documents, and photos depicting the county's past.
