The monument honors the noble men who marched beneath the flag of the Stars and Bars and were faithful to the end, praising them as glorious in life and sublime in death. It identifies Jefferson Davis, born June 3, 1808, and died Dec. 6, 1889, as the only President of the Confederacy from 1861 to 1865 and calls him a soldier, statesman, and patriot. It is also Grenada County's tribute to her Confederate soldiers and sailors of 1861–1865, and to the noble women of the South who, with eyes undimmed by fear and hearts of Spartan courage, gave their loved ones to their country to conquer or to die for truth and right and enshrined their deeds in deathless love while keeping vigil over sacred graves.
