Youngs Peak
Nature
Youngs Peak is a small mountain just east of Crawford, Colorado, on the western side of the West Elk Mountains. Rising to 7,424 feet and about 600 feet above the town, it is a prominent local landmark overlooking the valley. While much of the mountain is sedimentary rock, Saddle Mountain is notable as an exposed igneous intrusion called a laccolith. The summit is accessible by hiking trail or four-wheel-drive road and offers wide views in every direction, including Needle Rock, the West Elk Mountains, Crawford State Park, the Black Canyon uplift and Gunnison Gorge National Conservation Area, and Grand Mesa above the North Fork of the Gunnison River valley.
