Established in 1985, Newport, New Hampshire's Downtown National Historic District contains a wide variety of historic buildings dating back to the early 1900s. Their diverse architectural styles include Federal, Greek Revival, Italiante, French Second Empire, Gambrel, Romanesque Revival, Richardsonian Romanesque, Neo-Classical, and Neo-Colonial. The oldest structure in this district is the original Cheney block, built by Colonel William Cheney in 1810 and moved to its present location on Depot Street prior to 1876. Eighteen of the buildings in this district have been recognized as contributing historic character to the downtown by the National Park Service. The Town of Newport takes pride in its historic heritage.
