San Gabriel Wilderness is a protected area in Southern California covering more than 36,118 acres within Angeles National Forest and the San Gabriel Mountains National Monument, on the southern slopes of the San Gabriel Mountains. Its preservation grew from the 35,000-acre Devils Canyon–Bear Canyon Primitive Area and from the broader federal protection of the San Gabriel Mountains in 1892 as the San Gabriel Timberland Reserve, influenced by Abbot Kinney and John Muir and established by President Benjamin Harrison. Formally designated wilderness in 1968, it is reached by several trails and is managed under strict rules that forbid mechanized tools and biking, preserving an undeveloped landscape and experience.
