The Vandergrift Military Memorial honors local service members and those who died in war, including Lonny D. Wells, a sergeant in the 2nd Marine Expeditionary Forces born Jan. 10, 1975, who was killed in combat on Nov. 9, 2004, in Fallujah, Iraq. It also is dedicated to students of Vandergrift High School who answered their country’s call in the World War from 1917 to 1919, naming those who died and others who served in the Army and Navy. The memorial further lists those who made the supreme sacrifice in World War I, World War II, Korea, and Vietnam. It includes General Douglas MacArthur’s words on duty, honor, and country, praising sacrifice, moral duty, and the soldier’s willingness to give his life for his country.
