Six Flags Over Texas, a 212-acre amusement park in Arlington between Dallas and Fort Worth, opened on August 5, 1961, as the original park in the Six Flags chain. Created by Angus G. Wynne Jr. after a visit to Disneyland, it was named for the six governments that ruled Texas and originally divided into themed sections reflecting that history. Its strong first season established its popularity, and over time it became influential in ride design and park entertainment through innovations such as pay-one-price admission, early Broadway-style shows, and notable coaster and flume developments. The park has also changed how it presents Texas history while remaining a major destination.
