Asylum Light stands on a small island in Asylum Bay on Lake Winnebago near Oshkosh, Wisconsin, marking the division between the bay’s north and south sections. The site’s name came from the nearby Northern Asylum for the Insane, begun in 1871 and later known as the Winnebago Mental Health Institute. Built in 1937 as a Works Progress Administration project, the lighthouse was rejected by the Department of Transportation as a navigational light and was never illuminated. Though access later became unsafe as its bridge deteriorated, repairs in 2007 and a new bridge after 2019 storm damage restored access, leaving it as a local landmark rather than an active beacon.
