Black Mountain
Nature
Black Mountain is an 11,649-foot summit in the South Park Hills, a subrange of the Rocky Mountains in central Colorado. Located in Pike National Forest in Park County, about 21.7 miles south by east of Hartsel, it stands out as a prominent peak with a distinct presence above the surrounding uplands of South Park. The mountain was once known as Basaltic Mountain, a historic name that hints at the dark volcanic character echoed by its current name. Today, Black Mountain remains part of the high mountain landscape of the forested and open country around South Park.
