White Rim Road is a 71.2-mile unpaved four-wheel-drive route in Canyonlands National Park that follows the White Rim Sandstone below the Island in the Sky mesa through a remote landscape of cliffs, canyons, towers, and washes. Built in the 1950s by the Atomic Energy Commission to reach uranium prospects during the Cold War, it outlasted the failed mining effort that produced little uranium before being abandoned. Today it is a demanding backcountry route for four-wheel-drive vehicles, bikes, motorbikes, horseback riders, and hikers, known for isolation, limited water access, and striking landmarks such as Musselman Arch, Monument Basin, and Murphy Hogback.
