Reading Wood Black, a native of New Jersey, settled in Texas in 1853 near the Leona River, where he succeeded in many business ventures. His home and trading post stood on this site. He founded the town of Uvalde and gave land for a public school. He was elected County Commissioner in 1856 and State Representative in 1866.
