Wild Horse State Recreation Area is a Nevada state park on the northeast shore of Wild Horse Reservoir, about 67 miles north of Elko. Covering 120 acres, it serves as a year-round recreation base in a remote high-desert setting. Fishing is its main attraction, with ice fishing especially popular in winter, while other activities include camping, picnicking, boating, ice skating, sledding, snowmobiling, and skiing. The reservoir that anchors the park was created in 1937 and enlarged in 1969 by a new dam to about 2,830 acres, shaping the park’s character and importance as a major outdoor destination in northeastern Nevada.
