McAfee Peak is the highest point in Nevada’s Independence Mountains, rising in Elko County within the Mountain City Ranger District of the Humboldt-Toiyabe National Forest. In addition to its elevation, it stands out for its isolation from higher terrain, ranking twenty-first among Nevada summits in topographic prominence. That prominence reflects how distinctly the mountain rises above the surrounding landscape and helps define its importance within its range.
