Sycamore Canyon Wilderness is a 56,000-acre protected area in central Arizona spanning the Coconino, Kaibab, and Prescott national forests southwest of Flagstaff. Encompassing Sycamore Canyon and nearby country from south of Williams to the confluence of Sycamore Creek and the Verde River, it is one of the canyons that cut through the Mogollon Rim. The area is notable for exposed red sandstone, white limestone, and brown lava, as well as major ecological variation from pine and fir at higher elevations to sycamore, walnut, and cottonwood near water. Its trails reveal varied terrain, wildlife, and traces of the canyon’s cattle-grazing past, while adjoining wilderness extends the protected landscape eastward.
