Near Angel Fire, New Mexico, this national memorial honors veterans of the Vietnam War and holds a chapel dedicated on May 22, 1971. It was the first major memorial created to honor Vietnam veterans, giving it significance far beyond the state. Long operated as a New Mexico state park, its management passed in 2017 to the New Mexico Department of Veteran Services. In 1987, under the name Disabled American Veterans Vietnam Veterans National Memorial, the United States Congress recognized it as a memorial of national significance. It remains a major place of remembrance in the American Southwest.
