Arthur A. Smith Covered Bridge in Colrain, Massachusetts, carries Lyonsville Road across the North River and is a rare survivor of 19th-century covered bridge construction in the state. Built in 1869, it is one of only two Burr truss bridges in Massachusetts. After flood damage forced its abandonment at its original site in 1878, the town rehabilitated and moved it in 1896 to serve the main road to Heath. Strengthened in 1920, removed from service in 1982, and rebuilt in a major project completed in 2007, it withstood Hurricane Irene’s record flooding in 2011 with only slight damage and reopened to vehicles in 2021.
