Sitka Sedge State Natural Area is a 357-acre protected estuary and beach on the Oregon coast that preserves tidal marsh, mudflats, dunes, forested wetlands, freshwater marsh, and uplands in one landscape. Part of the traditional territory of the Nestucca group of the Tillamook people, it was later diked and farmed, with major alterations made by the Beltz dairy operation in the 1930s. From 1989 onward, nearby residents helped block logging, quarrying, motor vehicle use, and resort development. Acquired in 2014 and opened in 2018, the park protects important coastal habitat, wildlife, and shoreline while longer-term restoration questions remain over the old dike’s effects on fish passage and tidal flow.
